Bjørn Egge in Sonnenburg
Egge’s own account of Sonnenburg is one of the darkest chapters of his wartime story.
Captivity
After the Kvarstad operation, Egge passed through several German detention sites. His memoir describes the harsh conditions in Sonnenburg and his time as a Nacht und Nebel prisoner (pp. 18–19, 82–103).
The 1945 massacre
Egge later wrote about the prisoners killed at Sonnenburg. The memorial in today’s Słońsk documents the murder of 819 prisoners on the night of 30–31 January 1945. Egge had already been transferred to Sachsenhausen and did not witness the massacre.
A lifelong testimony
